A Quality School
Hammond School's mission is to provide for reading excellence and academic literacy through a quality education. Toward this goal, the principal, members of the staff, students, parents, and community members collaborate in the continuous improvement of all processes that contribute to the achievement of a quality education. This continuous process of improvement is monitored, supported, and constantly evaluated by a Quality Management Team which represents the different constituencies of the school. Quality Management Team members are assigned as facilitators to a number of Design Teams which address different aspects of the quality development process. Staff, parents, and members of the community join the Design Team of their choice.
Our decisions are data driven and reflect input from all constituencies. We provide instruction to all our students at grade level. Our teachers plans units of instruction in grade level teams. This long-term cooperative effort ensures quality in the delivery of instruction. Hammond offers a comprehensive academic curriculum enhanced by the latest technology and enriched by a variety of extracurricular activities. Our goal is to provide a successful academic experience to ensure that all our students become lifelong learners as well as productive and proactive members of society.
Charles G. Hammond Elementary School provides an intensive and comprehensive professional development that enhances teacher effectiveness and student's learning. The program emphasizes research based strategies that are applied across the curriculum. These include strategies for teaching word knowledge, comprehension, fluency, and writing not only in the language arts, but also in the content areas. In addition, the professional development program has presented effective teaching models, differentiated instruction, learning styles, standard based instruction, cooperative learning, developing portfolios for alternative assessments, and using brain research to increase the effectiveness of instruction. We also have a comprehensive parent training program that includes English as a second language, Spanish literacy, and other topics that reflect the needs of our parents and the community.
Hammond School's commitment to provide Quality Education has been recognized by several organizations. We received the Lincoln Award for commitment to Excellence. We received recognition from the Chicago Principals' Association for our Quality Staff Development Program and our Parent Involvement Program and for the Facilitative and Active Leadership of the principal.
